Personal essay: Can a friendship survive infertility?

“Friendships are suffering – even ending – from the strain of infertility.”

It’s not unusual to feel a rift if you are experiencing infertility while surrounded by friends having babies, writes Minna Dubin in Salon.com. She says that, although there is little research on the impact of infertility on friendships, two practitioners who specialize in infertility agree that 100 percent of their clients experiencing infertility have strained friendships.

“From what I’ve observed,” says one physician, “there appears to be a direct correlation between the length of time that someone struggles with infertility and the impact on their relationships.”
